A hydraulic firewood splitter is a great work saving piece of equipment. There are many designs and styles of hydraulic splitters to suit many needs but this one often overlooked feature or configuration can make operating a splitter more efficient and less work.
The configuration I am talking about is the placement of the wedge on horizontal firewood splitters since vertical splitters already naturally have this feature. Horizontal splitters have two basic designs, fixed wedge or moving wedge.
Fixed Wedge Firewood Splitters
With a fixed wedge splitter the wedge is mounted to the work table and the hydraulic ram pushes the wood into and past the wedge. The advantage to this is if you are only splitting your pieces once the finished pieces are automatically pushed off the table by the next pieces you split. It also can be slightly easier to build this kind and this configuration is usually necessary if you are using any kind of compound wedge.
Moving Wedge Firewood Splitters
A moving wedge is mounted directly onto the ram. The ram moves the wedge into the wood which is held stationary by an opposing anchor plate that is attached to the work table. The advantage of this is your wood stays in one place so if you have to split it again you don’t have to drag it back into place as you would with a fixed wedge model.
If you want a multiple wedge splitter or if your rounds only need to be split one time then a fixed wedge is best. But most of us use a single wedge and we have to run our rounds through multiple times. In this case I think a moving wedge is best for most people. With a fixed wedge everything gets pushed away in each pass and you have to drag it all back to give it another pass. For me that’s too much extra work and time wasted.
