I’ve used the sledge and maul and believe me once you’ve used the mechanical log splitter you do NOT want to go back to a maul!

I have to agree as a young man (26) I have split 1 tone of beech (tonight) by hand just by using a old marque peg (small stake that I found buried in my garden)a 5lb Faithfull splitting wedge, thats shit for splitting but will finish a split that the peg cant finish or gets jambed, a 5lb hammer and a sledge hammer. In reality splitting wood is as expensive as you want to make it..a bit like children!!!!. BUT when im retired with little pension to pay the fuel bill that might be just the ticket!

What ever happened to splitting by hand with a maul? Really….it would be several times faster than that, and easier, too.

Not to mention, it would cost about $60 for a good maul, sledge and a couple of wedges, and you’d easily be able to get through anything that splitter could do.

The reviews of those things – no matter what brand is on them – is not so good in terms of longevity.

And as mentioned above, I think you could fall asleep waiting for that thing.

I think it’s a DR wood splitter. My friend has one like it. It works pretty well if you’re taking large fireplace-sized logs and trying to make them smaller for a wood stove or something. I wouldn’t try to do a whole winter’s worth with it.
