Hydraulic log splitter capacity?

I have a tractor mounted hydraulic log splitter that I would like to convert to a trailer mount with small engine power for better portability. I’m good with a welder so I can make the trailer and mounts, basically all I need is an engine, pump, and reservoir. I’m looking at a 5.5 horsepower Honda engine, just wondered if I went with a larger engine and pump if I could increase the force of the ram, or is it limited by cylinder bore? I was looking at a few splitters and noticed they are rated in tons. What exactly is the limiting factor used to determine the ratings on these splitters? Also is there any formula used to calculate this figure?
