On an average 2000 to 3000 psi
I have seen them much lower but they were toys not wood splitters. Whatever you get in that range or higher will do anything you can throw at it in home type situation.
Good Luck!

Wood splits easiest when cold. Not so pleasant on the people. Always have minimum two people while splitting (safety) and makes it more enjoyable.

It depends on so many things. There are some that go as high a 20 Tons. It’ll split anything you can put on it. A smaller one would be 6-7 tons.

It depends on the size of the cylinder and the setting on the pressure relief valve. The standard home models use 2-1/2″ to 4″ diameter cylinders set at 1000psi on the relief valve which will give you between 2 and 5 tons pushing power which is plenty of power for normal wood splitting. The higher you go on cylinder diameter the more tons of pushing power you have but also the larger cyl(s) need a higher engine horsepower to make them work.If you have an 8″ cyl you can’t use a 5hp Briggs to run it , it would just stall every time you touched it to a block of wood

Previous splitter I used had 40 ton push on the ram.(powered by 1600cc car engine)
The average of general hire machines(in NZ) is 20 – 30 ton

I believe anything with less than 25 ton push on ram is a waste of time
