If you are like most people who do not have any idea what a log splitter is, it is a machine that is used for splitting softwood or hardwood tree rings into firewood. The logs are usually cut beforehand through the use of a saw bench or chain saw. A lot of the designs that are available for the machine are composed of rod and piston assemblies that are either electyrical or hydraulic. The machine is rated according to the tons of pressure that it can produce. The higher the rating for pressure is, the bigger the length and size of lumber that it can split.

If you are going to buy a log splitter for home use, you can choose a machine that has a rating of about ten tons or more. If you need a pressure of twenty five tons or more, you need to purchase the professional models that are hydraulic. If you prefer, you could also avail of a manual model which uses mechanical leverage in forcing wood into an assembly composed of a sharpened blade and corkscrew which is directly powered by an agricultural tractor.

A simple machine can be driven by an electric motor that is used for driving the hydraulic pump. A diesel or gasoline engine with or without a tractor can also be used. It has the advantage of being able to be moved into the site of work so that you do not have to transport the logs to the location of the machine. The split logs can then be moved more easily by trailers, trucks or bulk bags. But no matter what kind of power you use, there are always two methods that are utilized by the splitter. One is a hydraulic piston that is used in driving the wood into a stationary blade, and the other is a corkscrew mandrel that carries the wood into a wedge. There can be attachments to the log splitter that can be used to prevent the split woods from falling directly into the ground.

Before you choose log splitter plans and build a splitter you are going to want to make sure you are choosing the design that will be the best for your needs. Hydraulic log splitters follow a fairly basic design but there are some small differences that can make a big difference in the way they work.

There are two major styles of hydraulic splitters and that is vertical and horizontal. A vertical splitter gives you the advantage of working with your rounds close to the ground so you don’t have to lift them up on the work table.

The disadvantage of this is you will have to work on the ground bent over or kneeling down which can be uncomfortable and hard on your back. And after the pieces are split you may have to throw them out of your work space or lift them up to move them out of your way.

With a horizontal splitter you can work standing up in a comfortable position. If you are building your own splitter you can make the work table so it fits your height comfortably. After you split the pieces you can just push them off he table and hey fall out of your way.

The disadvantage of the horizontal splitter is you are going to have to somehow lift the rounds up to the work table. For me it’s worth lifting the rounds to be able to work in a comfortable position so I prefer the horizontal design. If the rounds are too big to safely lift I just rip them into a small enough size with a chainsaw.

If you want the best of both worlds you can build a splitter that will easily convert from horizontal to vertical. This is fairly easy to do by mounting the main I-beam to a hinge so it can tilt 90 degrees. I have never done this since I don’t find much use for a vertical splitter but I know some people like them.

Building a log splitter can be a fun project and they are not that difficult to build and can last for a long time if you build them right. I built 3 of them over 20 years ago and they are all still in commercial use today. Before you choose your log splitter plans just make sure you consider that there are differences in designs that can make a huge difference in the way they will serve you.

Hydraulic log splitters can cost a lot of money when you buy one new. If you can get a used one for a much discounted price this may be the way to go. Here is what you should look for when looking at used splitters.

Hydraulic splitters undergo great stresses and pressure in their operation so they must be built from durable materials and parts. If not they would quickly self destruct. Because of this and because of how simple these machines are they really don’t wear out very fast if they are well built. Hydraulic components use oil as a transfer of energy so there is very little metal on metal and hydraulic components are naturally long lasting.

Since hydraulic log splitters can last for so long, purchasing a used splitter can be a good idea. Even if parts do wear out most of them are relatively inexpensive. I have three log splitters that have been in commercial service for over 20 years and they are all still using the original hydraulic components.

When choosing a splitter look for a frame built of thick steel, especially the main I beam. If possible test it first and make sure the beam doesn’t flex much if at all when splitting a tough piece. Look for good solid welds and large high grade bolts.

If you have a good frame to start with it should last a long time. If you have to replace some of the mechanical components you can figure that into the price when negotiating with the seller. Here are a few things to look for.

The engine is usually the most expensive part of a splitter and also the most likely component to wear out. Make sure it is easy to start and runs smooth. If not it may need work or need to be replaced. Some engines can be replaced for $300 to $400 but some brands are much more.

Check the hydraulic components for leaks. If the pump, cylinder, or control valve are leaking hydraulic fluid it could be an indication that these components will eventually need to be replaced or repaired. Although sometimes hydraulic components can leak for a long time and still work fine. But hydraulic fluid is not cheap so it may cost less in the long term to replace the parts. Most hydraulic components don’t cost much to replace anyway.

Leaking hydraulic hoses and fittings may need to be replaced but in many cases just tightening them will stop the leak. Check the condition of the hoses. Sometimes hoses may look bad on the outside but it’s just the outside layer and the hose can last a long time. If the high pressure hoses have deep cracks or gouges replace them. A hose bursting and shooting hot hydraulic fluid everywhere is not much fun.

Open the hydraulic reservoir and dip something in it to look at the fluid. The fluid should be relatively clean and not black and should not have water in it.

If it’s a towable splitter look at the tires and make sure they still have good tread and are not damaged. If you can, jack up each tire and spin it to make sure the bearings turn smooth and quiet.

This should give you some idea of what to look for when looking for a used splitter. The main thing is to get a good solid design. After that the components can be replaced easily even if you are only mildly mechanically capable. Just factor the replacement or repair costs into the price.
