Elm just does not split well at all. It is fibrous and sticks together.

Unless the elm is well seasoned and very dry then there is no easy way to split it. Even then it is difficult. If it is not very dry then whatever you use to split it will simply sink into the wood. Whatever you do don’t use a steel wedge. The wedge will disappear into the log without splitting it. If you use an ax or a splitting maul you will only succeed in turning the top of the log into mush and making yourself exhausted. If you store the wood until it dries (about 3-4 years) then it will split but only with great difficulty.

Yes Elm can be very difficult. I have many times actually crushed it before it would split. I always avoid Elm especially where any branches were cut off a log to be split.

a 26ton wood splitter would work ok it still splits hard
